On November 12th the Japan Post Office announced that from November 17 it would stop accepting all forms of airmail parcels to the United States weighing more than 453 grams (16oz), “following the airport security enforcement recently put in place in the USA to counter possible terrorist threats.”
For two weeks now, if you had not registered either a business account or a frequent shipping account with the Japan Post Office you would have been unable to send any airmail packages over 1lb by EMS, airmail or air freight (SAL).
The only options were either to break up packages into smaller units and ship multiple items, or ship larger packages by surface mail (6-8 weeks for delivery). Failing that, a third option was to ship the parcel to a friend in a third country who would then forward it to the US address.
However, when I called in on my local branch of the Japan Post Office today I was told that from tomorrow (i.e. December 1st) the restriction would be lifted. I double checked that I had understood correctly, to the point of checking that I would be able to resume shipping mahjong sets to the USA by Express Mail Service. The answer was a clear YES!
So it seems that the Japan-USA air-shipping crisis is over!
Just in time for Christmas.
Cheers!
