Shogi is a Japanese board game played by two players. The object of the game of Shogi is to capture the opponent's King. Shogi is similar to chess, but with some key differences:
  • Most pieces can be promoted once they reach the opposite side of the board.
  • Instead of making a move a player can place a captured piece on the board and use it against his opponent.
  • The board consists of a 9x9 grid of squares.
  • Each player starts with 20 pieces.
  • The pieces are all the same color because a player can use captured pieces against his opponent.
  • There is no castling.
If you are not familiar with the rules of the game but would like to play, there is an excellent page that tells you everything you need to know over at Wikipedia.
