A Yakitori tile is a flat tile, similar in size to the Wind Marker, but with a picture of a skewered sparrow on it.
At the start of a game, each player places a Yakitori tile on the table to his right and can only remove it on completing a hand. Any player who fails to complete a hand through the course of a game is said to be “Yakitori” – skewered and grilled sparrow – and has to pay a penalty to the other players.
Here is a selection of Yakitori tiles. The orange set at the top is the most common type to be seen in mahjong parlours.
